Sweaty Bands ready to take off

Donna Browning has a clear mission for her work.

She helps women feel and look good.

For 22 years, Browning’s fitness classes in Cincinnati and Chicago have served that mission. Through weight training, aerobics and cardio workouts, she’s helped thousands of women lose weight, get buff and feel better.

Today, Browning makes an even bigger impact on women from nearby in Terrace Park to Norway and Australia. Hundreds of thousands of ladies and girls have purchased and now wear Sweaty Bands, the fashionable headbands she created in 2007 to hold back her long blonde locks while she taught. This year, the Linwood company Browning runs with her husband, Doug, will have supplied bands to 900 national retail stores and 60 fitness events, and sold thousands online at www.sweatybands.com. They’ll double sales in 2011 to $3 million.

Browning’s story is a bit of serendipity. The mother of three created the product out of necessity, seeking only to improve the flimsy, uncomfortable and bland headbands she bought at drug stores. Careful study of those bands helped her select the simple combination of colorful ribbon, velvet, elastic and thread.

She taught herself to sew the elements together on a borrowed machine. Eventually, she landed on a 20-inch band snug enough to stay put but loose enough to avoid headaches. It could fit under bike helmets, sunglasses and the wireless microphone she used while she taught. And the design could be customized to a personality – small pink piglets for a Flying Pig Marathon runner, pom-poms for a cheerleader, sophisticated paisley prints for a fit mom.

The bands soon became gifts for friends and family members. Clients wanted to buy them. Local boutiques wanted to sell them.

“I just knew every woman was going to love these,” Browning says. “You’re sweaty and gross and working out, but it gives you a little style.”

Trial and error – and the availability of a web site URL — helped her land on the name Sweaty Bands. A client created a logo, the “I Dream of Jeannie” inspired blonde on a yoga mat which tops the web site and appears on product packaging. Browning set two prices, $15 for thin bands and $18 for thick ones.

Sales help came from Doug, a long-time dealer of German cabinetry. The pair spent 2008 and 2009 securing endorsements from professional athletes like volleyball star Gabby Reece and soccer player Heather Mitts. They earned reviews from national fitness magazines and bloggers. They launched an event marketing strategy, setting up pop-up shops at local sporting events like the Duramed FUTURES Tour for young female golfers, the Western & Southern Open, the AVP professional beach volleyball tour and regional running events.

As sales picked up at local stores like Fleet Feet in Blue Ash, store owners helped secure new retail deals.

“They’re easy and they sell,” says Susan Frankel, co-owner of the store, who helped get the bands into at least 50 national Fleet Feets. “People seem to be in their work out gear a lot more and Sweaty Bands help make the outfit.”

Browning gradually hired seamstresses to take over the sewing. Today, about 45 ladies pick up materials from the shop each week to make the bands. A factory in North Carolina handles custom orders, and a facility in China processes orders of 10,000 bands or more.

Doug came aboard full-time in 2010 to build a nationwide sales force and launch the event strategy. Since early this year, he’s attracted the interest of larger retailers.REI, the Washington-based outdoor gear and apparel retailer, will soon place orders for its 120 stores.

Deals with Greek Licensing, which holds the trademark for 26 national sororities, and the major collegiate and professional sports leagues (NCAA, NBA, MLB, etc.) will cause major spikes in business by mid-2012.

Five event teams around the nation now set up pop-up shops at marathon expos and fitness events, selling hundreds of styles of bands to runners and athletes.

In January, a newly-designed web site will let customers build their own bands for $24 apiece. It will also prepare the Brownings to handle 60 times the business, providing sophisticated back-end reporting tools.

“Our site still looks mom-and-pop,” Donna says. “This Web site will help us handle the Dick’s Sporting Goods of the world.”

The site is being built by agil-IT-y, the Sycamore Township firm that also built the e-commerce site behind TOMS Shoes.

The Brownings haven’t had time to set a formal business plan. They’ve funded the company out of their own pockets, reinvesting all of their early sales in product and staff.

They now face the challenge of managing and organizing a growing staff. They’ve brought on Donna’s sister Lisa Fleming to handle the day-to-day operations – supervision of a staff of 20 high school and college workers, moms and empty nesters filling orders. The couple, meanwhile, is charting a strategy to differentiate from a slew of new competitors.

Doug is busy researching the possibility of making Sweaty Bands just one product of Sweaty Brands. He hopes to add new Sweaty product lines, like water bottles, bikinis or swim trunks.

Donna stays focused on the core product, keeping fresh and fun the collection of about 700 different band designs. Each band gets a quirky name, like “I’m gonna kick your butt-erfly” for a band of butterflies, “Ferngalicious” for green ferns and “Scroll Down Your Playlist” for a pink, white and blue scroll print.

She’ll bring out new styles, create discounted monthly six-packs and offer promotions and photo-of-the-month contests.

“It truly has been fun,” she says. “Good things happen every day. We’re giving women something they love.”

Some of you Sweaty Bands fans may know the infamous Merle. She is a Sweaty Bands Ambassador traveling the world. We never know where she is working any given week. Now Merle is taking some much needed time off for the holidays. And, then all of the sudden she appears in NYC on the Today Show with all her friends! She can't stop working!! We know she is single and looking for love, so we believe her intention was to catch Matt's eye (isn't he married?). It looks as if Matt was a little busy, but I did hear she was hanging with Bieber that same day, so be on the lookout for the next series of Where's Merle?! photos! Should be interesting.

If you don't follow pro beach volleyball, you probably were not aware that the 2010 AVP season was cancelled after the 6th week of the 12 week season. As the Official Headband of the AVP Tour, Sweaty Bands was very sad to hear the news. Long Beach, CA was the last official event. We only hope that something positive happens and there will again be professional beach volleyball in 2011. Cross your fingers! Thanks to all the women players who sported Sweaty Bands throughout the season!

This is me with an Inca tern in the aviary Discovery Cove. I can't believe the little guy let me get that close to him... and then he actually hung out with me for a little bit, he must of been admiring my sweaty band!

This is me and one of my very best friends, Tammy with Diego at Discovery Cove in Orlando, FL it was such an incredible experience being that close to such a cool animal. That was also my first time wearing sweaty bands, thanks to Tammy! She brought all of hers down on her trip here to FL! Sweaty Bandits

What are they? They're Sweaty Bands made for smaller heads. We've found that they fit the head's of 3 to 4 year old's all the way up to 6 year old's. Really any petite-sized head. Don't confuse it as a chlidren's-only Sweaty Band because there are adults who wear this size.

Currently there are 10 styles available. Although, stay tuned for new styles to come!

Do you recognize the man?! Yes, that's President Jimmy Carter.

Paula ran in the Plains, GA Peanut Festival Road Race and won 1st Place in her age group! The result was a photo op with the Pres!

Carrie Birth - avid runner and Sweaty Bands wearer!

The running world has definitely adopted the Sweaty Bands brand as the accessory of choice while competing in a race or for just a leisurely jog around the 'hood.

Pictured here is an avid runner - Carrie Birth. Carrie is an Assistant Brand Manager at Procter & Gamble for Pampers. While not improving the lives of millions of moms and babies, Carrie runs competitively.

This photo was taken after she won the 10K Fleet Feet Sports Lady Distance Classic in Blue Ash, OH. She particularly likes this Do the Polka Dots Red/White Sweaty Band. It apparently brings her good fortune! She recently sent it back for a minor repair because she said she had to wear this one!

Here are the Broderick's looking HOT on the beach at Kiawah Island! Two sisters and a cousin in the middle. From left to right it's Jenny, Katie and Emily. The two sisters apparently didn't tell their cousin she needed a Sweaty Band for the family vacation! All three are from the hometown of Sweaty Bands - Cincinnati!

When they submitted the photo they added this caption:
